Mother Of Two Jailed Six Months For Robbery


A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Bauchi State has sentenced a mother of two, Maryam Musa, to six months imprisonment for robbery. The 27-year-old woman was accused of being a member of a motorcycle-snatching syndicate which was smashed by the Bauchi State Police Command. Musa had said she was a widow and was not involved in the crime committed by members of the syndicate. But she was dragged to the Chief Magistrate’s Court VI in Bauchi along with other members of the syndicate on charges bordering on robbery. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Haruna
Mohammed, in a statement on Tuesday said Musa, Ahmed Zakari and Ashiru Abdullahi pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy and theft of five motorcycles, contrary to sections 96 and 286 of the Penal Code. He said they were sentenced by the court to six months imprisonment with an option of N10,000 each. Mohammed said, “Another member of the syndicate, Yusuf Karama, was charged with being in possession of stolen property contrary to sections 319 and 40 of the Penal Code. He also pleaded guilty and was subsequently sentenced to two years imprisonment. “He was, however, given an option of fine of N20,000.'' In a related development, the police in Bauchi arrested a 32-year-old suspected robber, identified simply as Ogbodo, for allegedly robbing one Alhaji Yakubu Lamido of N414,630 at Muda Lawal Market junction in Bauchi metropolis. Parading the suspect, the police image maker, Mohammed, said Ogbodo, a resident of Ugwu Aji in Enugu State, conspired with one other person, now at large, on a motorcycle to rob their victim. The PPRO said items recovered from the suspect included one Barreta pistol with number, U4500564Z; 12 rounds of live ammunition and one motorcycle. DSP Mohammed stated that the suspect and his accomplice were strongly suspected to be behind series of robbery incidents at shopping malls and filling stations in the Bauchi metropolis in recent times.
