South Africa football captain Senzo Meyiwa has been shot dead in Johannesburg, police have said in a statement.
The 27-year-old Meyiwa was a goalkeeper for Orlando Pirates and had captained his country in their last four matches in the African Nations Cup qualifiers.
He was shot dead when intruders entered his girlfriend's house in Vosloorus, a town 20 miles south of Johannesburg.
He had played in a match yesterday when his side advanced to the semi-finals of the South African League Cup, defeating Ajax Cape Town 4-1.
Club chairman said: 'This is a sad loss to Senzo's family especially his children, to Orlando Pirates and the nation'
