Investigations by The Punch reveals that Premium Motor Spirit still
sells for N97 per litre in most of the petrol stations in Abia State
despite the directive by the federal government for the essential
commodity to be sold for N87.While some of the independent petrol
stations visited by our correspondent in Umuahia insisted on the old
price, others did not open for business. One of the petrol attendants who
pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that they were yet to adjust
their meters to reflect the new pump price, hence their decision to
continue with the old price. Some filling stations also dispensed their
products at N100 per liter. However, the Nigeria
National Petroleum Corporation mega station Umuahia sold the product at
the new pump price.Abia State Sales Representative of NNPC , Mr. Samuel
Eneh, told our correspondent that as early as 8am, the station had
started selling at the new pump price in compliance with the directives
by the Minister of Petroleum , Mrs. Alison Diezani. He assured that the
mega station had enough product in stock and would continue to dispense
at the new price.Asked why other NNPC affiliate filling stations in town
were not open to customers, Eneh said it was much likely they were
waiting for engineers to adjust their meters to reflect the new price. He
said he would go round town to ensure compliance with the new pump
price, assuring that NNPC and its affiliate stations in the state will
not flout the directives.Commissioner for Petroleum, Chief Don Ubani,
hailed federal government for the reduction in pump price describing it
as a welcome development.
