A businessman, Mr Friday Nnaji , who petitioned the Inspector-General of
Police against the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Abubakar,
has been detained by the police in Enugu.Nnaji was clamped into
detention along with Uwaezoke Agbo, Uchenna Okoh and Nwigwe Stanley on
December 29, 2014.It was gathered that the police detained the
petitioner because the petition reportedly embarrassed the CP.
Nnaji had in his petition, dated December 20, 2014, asked the IG to
redeploy and investigate the CP for allegedly confiscating his family
land and conspiring with hoodlums to kill his younger brother, Chinedu. The Enugu indigene alleged that Abubakar sold the confiscated plots of land for N9m.
Punch
reports that, However, the CP had denied complicity in Chinedu’s death
and involvement in the land issue, adding that it was the Nnaji family
members that offered him the plots of land which he said he rejected.
But the lawyer to the petitioner, Sunny Anyanwu, who confirmed the
detention of his client and his brothers to our correspondent on the
phone, explained that the police detained the men because of an
allegation that they were involved in armed robbery.
Anyanwu said,
“My client and three others have been in police detention since December
29, 2014, on the allegation by one Ugwu, who claimed that some armed
robbers attacked his home.
“Ugwu is a suspect in the murder of Chinedu, my client’s younger
brother, whose corpse is still at the Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre in
Enugu. An autopsy has yet to be carried out on the body.”
The lawyer said a witness to Chinedu’s murder, Paterson Nnamani, who
visited the police to give a statement on the incident was also detained
by the CP.
Nnaji in the petition, which was also copied to the Police Service
Commission, alleged that the CP violated a Supreme Court judgment which
awarded the land to the Umunenshi family against the Umuewo-ukwu family.
When contacted, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amarizu, in a text message said,
“There are two groups that allegedly clashed, leading to death of
someone. The case is being investigated with a view to establishing
those that participated in the alleged incident.”
