LOCAL residents in Gombi town in Adamawa State have expressed concern about recent the prospect of terrorist activity in their area after a military helicopter was seen delivering three bombs to a nearby hill. Over recent weeks, Nigeria’s military has enjoyed success in flushing Boko Haram out of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States, placing the terrorists on the back foot. However, over the last few days, a helicopter in military colours was seen delivering munitions to the Gombi area, raising fears that it may be resupplying the terrorists. Residents of the area said they became suspicious of the aircraft encircled the town for a long time. After watching it, local hunters and members of the vigilante group the civilian Joint Task Force mounted surveillance on the area,
following suspicion that the weapons might have been deposited for ulterior motives. Local resident, Musa Kalla, said: “After a long time encircling the town, the aircraft finally deposited weapons suspected to be bombs behind the Gombi hills.” One other resident of the area said there have been attacks on neighbouring villages by Boko Haram insurgents, as Nigerian troops intensify their onslaught against them, leading to the death of many and destruction of property. Yesterday, local hunters shot and killed a suspected suicide bomber, who was trying to launch an attack on a mosque at the Tashar Marghi area of Gombi. Othman Abubakar, the spokesman for the Adamawa State Police Command, confirmed the developments, saying that the bombs in question had expired and the authorities decided to store them there. He urged residents to go about their normal businesses as the bombs will not cause any harm. Mr Abubakar said: “Yes, military authorities have confirmed to us that the bombs have expired, so, people should not be scared. Also, in the early hours of Monday during prayers, a suicide bomber carrying two explosives was shot and killed by local hunters.” According to Nigeria’s defence headquarters, the military has enjoyed more success against Boko Haram, liberating Kukawa, Geri and Gujba in Yobe State. It added that towns from which it has driven Boko Haram included Shikah, Fikayel, Tetebah, Buza, Kamla, Bumsa, Monguno, Marte, Gamboru Ngala, Dikwa, Baga, Gajigana, Ngaze, Ngenzai, Marte Junction, Yoyo, Kekeno, Kukawa, Cross Kauwa, Kangarwa, Amirari, Monguno, Gabchari, Abba Jabari, Zuntur, Gajigana, Gajiram, Damakar, Kumaliwa, Bosso Wanti, Jeram and Kabrisungul.
