  • Anambra governor signs agreement for modern abattoir
GOVERNOR Willie Obiano of Anambra State has signed a memoranda of understanding with an indigenous firm for the construction and management of a modern abattoir. The agreement was signed between the state and the Integrated Farms Ltd for $11.4 million (about N2.2 billion). The abattoir is expected to process and package meat in the best hygienic conditions.
Under the agreement, Integrated Farms is expected to contribute 90 per cent of the equity while the state government is to contribute 10 per cent. More From Tribune
  • Parents beg teachers to end strike in Ebonyi
SOME parents in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, on Wednesday, called for an immediate end to the ongoing strike embarked on by the state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT). The parents, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the lingering crisis, expressed displeasure and called for urgent solution to the impasse. They said that the strike, which began on May 25, had paralysed academic activities in all public primary and secondary schools in the state.   • Catholic priest summoned before Okija shrine, vows never to go there
THE Rector of Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo, Reverend Father Wence Madu, has been summoned before a local deity, Ogwugwu Okija, in Anambra State. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that Madu’s summons was sequel to a report made against him by an aggrieved staff member of polytechnic. A copy of the summons released to journalists in Owerri on Wednesday was signed by one Ukaegbu Obasi. "There is a report of injustice, collaboration and conspiracy made against you by an innocent and outraged staff. Be also informed that you must come to the Ogwugwu with clean hands.   • Tompolo Denies Receiving N1.5bn Monthly
High Chief Government Ekpomupolo, also known as ‘Tompolo’ has denied allegations made against him by the pioneer chairman of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Alhaji Tijani Ramalan, that he was paid N1.5billion monthly for the protection of the nation’s maritime domain. Speaking through his spokesperson, Comrade Paul Bebenimibo,Tompolo said Ramalan is merely seeking desperate attention in the hope of getting a job. The statement reads in part: “My attention has been drawn to a publication in the Leadership newspaper of Wednesday June 3, 2015. Some thugs loyal to Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Wednesday descended on The PUNCH Correspondent in Ekiti State, Kamarudeen Ogundele, beating him to stupor while on official duty. The thugs, who continued to lay siege to the House of Assembly Complex and all roads leading to the state capital, attacked him around noon on Bank Road, very close to a road-block mounted by the police near the Assembly complex. He had gone to gauge the mood in town when the thugs descended on him for trying to take the picture of women praying for peace in the state, about 200 metres away from the Assembly complex.   • N8bn scam: Cash assistant has N134m in one account, says EFCC
Hearing in the Central Bank of Nigeria N8bn mutilated currency fraud suit continued at the Federal High Court, Ibadan on Wednesday as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission told the court that one of the accused persons, Mr. Ayodeji Alase, had N134m in one of his bank accounts. The EFCC told the trial judge, Justice A.O. Faaji, that Alase, a primary six certificate holder, started work at First Bank as a guard before he was promoted to the position of a cash assistant. The lead prosecution counsel for the EFCC, Mr. Rotimi Jacob (SAN), also told the court that the accused had property worth hundreds of millions of naira. Read More From Punch

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday assured Nigerians that he would do all within his powers to ensure that they would not regret entrusting national responsibility to him by electing him during the March 28 presidential election.   • Rivers fatal dog meal: Death toll rises to 11
WOJI in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State was yesterday thrown into confusion as the death toll from the suspected dog meat meal rose to 11. Five persons died two days ago after consuming the meal. The increase has forced the community to announce that anyone who was at the restaurant should present himself for preventive steps to be taken.   • Senate approves life sentence for rape, 10 years for incest
ABUJA—HENCEFORTH, anybody found guilty of rape, child sex tourism or deliberate passage of HIV/AIDS to innocent citizens, and other sexual offences, will face life imprisonment.
This was contained in the Sexual Offences Bill sponsored by Senator Chris Anyanwu, which was passed into law yesterday by the Senate. The bill, among others, prescribes life imprisonment for gang rape, 10 years for incest, another 10 years imprisonment for child pornography or more and a fine of N2 million as well as 14 years jail term for sexual offences. Presenting the report in the chamber yesterday, Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Umaru Dahiru, said the bill seeks to redefine and consolidate existing laws on sexual offences. ABUJA — President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, in Niger Republic renewed his vow to crush the Boko Haram Islamic sect, saying “five years of the presence of this evil sect is enough.'' Speaking at a news conference in Niger during his first visit outside the country since inauguration, Buhari expressed confidence in the ability of the Nigerian military to overcome and eradicate Boko Haram. At the news conference with Niger’s President Mahamadou Issoufou, he also said that Nigeria will soon take over from Nigerien soldiers who occupy towns liberated from the Islamist militant group.
