Ondo Govt. Plans To Lift Okada Ban In Akure This Week

The Ondo State Government may lift the ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly called Okada, in Akure metropolis this week, the State Commissioner for Information, Mr Kayode Akinmade, has said. The state government suspended the operation of commercial motorcycles as well as their ticketing activities in June following a protest by the operators against the alleged
extortion by officials of the state Ministry of Transport. The protest led the destruction of government property. Akinmade, who said this on Tuesday in Akure, added that the government would deliberate on the report of the committee set up to look into the issue and come up with recommendations, which would guarantee a proper and regulated operation of commercial motorcyclists in the state. The information commissioner pointed out that motorcycles plying the state roads must be duly registered to ensure easy identification of legal and illegal operators. He said the government was determined to curb the ploy of kidnappers and bandits to abduct residents and snatch bags of the citizens. Akinmade stated, “There is the need for the operators to be properly identified; government wants them to perfect their papers  and be well regulated, that is what government is working to achieve and the cooperation of  everyone is needed in this regard. “Okada operators are part of the society and they deserve to earn their living, but they must do that in accordance with the law of the land.''The commissioner then urged  the operators, whose motorcycles had been seized, to go to the Ministry of Transport to collect them.
