Academic activities at the Bayelsa State-owned Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Amassoma, were disrupted on Tuesday as students demonstrated over an academic regulation of the Faculty of Engineering. The regulation, it was learnt, will affect many students in the Engineering
Faculty of the school from graduating in the next academic session. Consequently, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Humphrey Ogoni, has directed all students of the institution to embark on a mid-semester break beginning from Tuesday. He also asked all those students living in
the school hostels to vacate immediately. About 20 students who did not clear their core engineering courses of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in their lower levels were affected by the new regulation of the faculty. The students who were in solidarity with the affected final year undergraduates went on the rampage to disrupt academic activities necessitating the management to shut down the school’s activities indefinitely. The VC said the university authorities would review the regulation and that the students would now be informed of the resumption date at the appropriate time.
