Nigeria’s Sports Minister Tammy Danagogo has confessed he is yet to recover from the Super Eagles’ defeat in the Saturday match against Sudan.
The October 11 loss (0-1) to the Falcons of Sudan, which became a great shock for many Nigerians, placed the Eagles at the bottom of Group A in the ongoing qualifiers for the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
South Africa tops the group with 7 points, Congo has 6 and Sudan 3 points, NAN recalls.
Speaking about the sad development, which has seriously jeopardized the chance of Eagles’ qualifying for the tournament, Danagogo said:
“I am trying to overcome that loss; it was a shocking defeat and indeed I was really pained, Nigeria was pained too. But as sportsmen, we know that when you go into the field it’s either you win or you lose, so it has happened. We are trying to see how we can move forward from there.”
Although the official expressed optimist over the outcome of the 3 upcoming group matches, he lamented over the fact that AFCON defending champions should be struggling to qualify from the group where teams are composed of local players mainly.
The new President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick had earlier characterized the situation with Nigeria’s current position in the group table as “embarrassing”.
The squad players also seemed devastated after the game. The head coach Stephen Keshi and the goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama publicly apologized to Nigerians for the match outcome. Lille stopper Enyeama asked the supporters to pray for the team to win the 3 upcoming games, which is actually a must for the Eagles.
