Obasanjo Visits Market, Tells Traders To Vote On Saturday
A former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has urged Nigerians to go out in large numbers on Saturday and vote in the governorship and state House of Assembly elections as they did in the presidential and National Assembly elections on March 28. He said this on Saturday during a surprise visit to Itoku Market in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State, while interacting with the traders in the market. Dressed in blue adire, Obasanjo moved from the adire sellers’ section to herbs sellers’ section, among others, felicitating with them on the spirit of Easter season.
The former president caused a stir within the market as the traders began to chant Sai Baba Obasanjo, Sai Amosun. But Obasanjo refused to name the party he would want the traders to vote for when
journalists caught up with him in the market. In his response to what advice he would give to the traders ahead of the April 11 election, Obasanjo said, “They should do exactly what they did last Saturday.'' He said he had come to felicitate with the traders in the spirit of the Easter season.
Obasanjo, who spoke in Yoruba said, “Since I came back from Abuja, I have not come here to say hello to you. This is my community. As a member of the community, I want to know what’s going on and what’s happening in the community.'' It will be recalled that Obasanjo said he had retired from partisan politics earlier this year, when he supervised the tearing of his Peoples Democratic Party membership card publicly. He then promised to remain a statesman. During his 78th birthday recently, Obasanjo had endorsed the re-election bid of the incumbent governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun. He had said he had done well and should be supported to continue with the good work. Again in the March 28 election, at ward 11, polling unit 2, Olusomi’s compound in Sokori, Abeokuta, where Obasanjo cast his vote, APC won with a wide margin.
