Many Injured As Another Building Collapses In Lagos

A two-storey building under construction collapsed, yesterday, in the densely-populated Ogbowankwo, Ajegunle area of Lagos, leaving several persons injured. An eyewitness, Fatai
Balogun, who claimed to be sleeping in the building as he was recently ejected from his one-room apartment at Layinka Street, said he woke up to observe the early morning prayer before preparing what to eat for the Muslim fast, when he saw part of the building collapsing. He said: “I alerted the workers, who scurried in different directions. But one of them was hit by a brick and he fell down. We rushed back to him and carried him. It was part of the top floors that collapsed.” One of the construction workers, who gave his name as Femi, said: “Some of us were working on one side of the building, when it collapsed. No one can point to what exactly led to the collapse, as the cement was well mixed. We are happy that none of us died in the process.” The building Policemen and other rescue operators, who went there, directed onlookers to leave before a worse calamity will befall them.
